Parents of the Year

170. What pushes adult kids to cut off their parents?

Caroline & Andrew Season 5 Episode 170

More and more adult children are stepping away from their parents—and not always for the reasons you think.

In this honest episode, Andrew and Caroline unpack what drives parental estrangement, and what we can actually do to reduce the risk.

From overbearing affection to controlling dynamics, political tension, and emotional repair gone wrong, we explore the subtle and not-so-subtle ways connection can break down over time.

This one’s for anyone invested in fostering relationships that stand the test of time.

 Homework Ideas

Reflect + Reset Activity: “How Am I Showing Up?”

Spend 15 minutes journaling your answers to these questions:

  • Do I let my child express themselves without jumping in to fix?
  • Do I ask curious questions—or give advice before it’s asked for?
  • Do I give them space to make choices (and mistakes)?
  • Do I have interests and connections outside of parenting?

Then write down one small thing you’ll try this week to step back without checking out.

Connection Without Control

At your next check-in with your child or teen:

  • Skip the advice.
  • Ask, “What are you thinking about doing?” or “What’s on your mind about that?”
  • Offer support only if they ask for it.
