Parents of the Year
20. Should parents put up with disrespect and thanklessness?
Show Notes

As a psychologist working with families, Caroline sees many parents get upset when their kids act rude, disrespectful, unappreciative, and even downright mean. Parents always comment, “I would never even dream of saying that to my parent when I was a kid!” and are left feeling angry, hurt, and unsure of what to do.

Unfortunately, we have created a culture of disrespect over the years and we have seen (and experienced!) how pervasive it is for children and teens to be rude and disrespectful to adults.

We won’t go into the details of why – that is a whole other episode (though media certainly plays a big piece in it). However, the question for today is, do we put up with it?

Parents are stressed, which has only gotten worse since COVID (and, researchers have shown that COVID has left parents feeling far more stressed than people without kids). Parenting can be awesome, but it can also be an exhausting job that is worsened when our kids yell at us, ignore us, argue with us, call us names, take us for granted, and never show any appreciation for all we do.

Join Caroline and Andrew in today’s episode where they chat about whether we should put up with all the disrespect and thanklessness.
